I shared a few of my goals for the blog the other day, but I wanted to share a few of my personal intentions for the new year, too. I’m going with “intentions” this year – simply put, things I intend to work on – rather than goals (specific, black and white measures of success) or resolutions (things I must or mustn’t do for X reason). I’ve learned over the past few years to follow the path of least resistance, not to force things, and intentions feel like the best way to make positive changes in my personal life while still following this model.
I’m totally Type A and a recovering perfectionist, so I can’t totally abandon goal setting, but I’m trying to keep the SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-bound) goals to the blog and my job/work.
My 2018 Intentions
Reduce our toxic load. I’ve been working to reduce our exposure to environmental toxins for the past few years but want to continue to reduce our toxic load especially now that Max is around (i.e., all-natural body/beauty products, all-natural cleaners, glass/metal containers over plastic, etc.).
Nurture more relationships. I cherish the friendships I have, and as we all get older and let’s face it, much much busier, I really want to nurture more of my relationships and not let life get in the way of growth.
Meet people where they are. This was inspired by another blogger I follow, and this is going to be a big one for me. It will also probably be the hardest, because I always expect a lot of people (and myself). I’ve been told “the key to happiness is low expectations”, and while I try to get into that mindset, I struggle with it sometimes. What does a “low” expectation mean? I need a concrete idea of what to expect, so the idea of “meeting people where they are” works better for me. My intention is to go into situations knowing and respecting where people are at the moment, not judging them for where I want them to be.
Are any of you setting intentions instead of resolutions this year? I’d love to hear what you have in mind! Looking forward to an exciting, happy, healthy new year!
